Science, Spirituality and Evolution - enlarged 2nd edition

This book is the second enlarged edition of the book Science and Spirituality, which we presented earlier. It is available by the African Books Collective and locally printed.

Science, Spirituality and Evolution

About the Book

Science, Spirituality and Evolution is an attempt to highlight the spiritual potential within the recent and on-going discoveries in both the science of the quantum world and the science of the larger Cosmos. Science is now confirming what the mystics in former ages taught us. Somehow, these mystics, through silence and meditation, were able to discern and touch deep truths about what existence means. Abstract Algebra, which was once perceived as purely abstract with no practical application, is now at the heart of explaining existence within the quantum world. Thus mathematics, science and spirituality are just different faces of the same reality. This small booklet ‘Science, Spirituality and Evolution’ merely introduces different aspects of this one reality which the author hopes to develop in more detail in further booklets.

About the Author

John A Ryan is a Catholic Priest belonging to St Patrick’s Mission Society whose headquarters, up to 2016, was based in his native Ireland but has now moved to Nairobi in Kenya. He has two passions. The first is to promote a sense of the spirituality within the earth community and the second is a love of abstract algebra. He has worked in Mzuzu Diocese since his ordination to priesthood in 1978. In 2016 he was consecrated Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese. Before becoming Bishop he was Professor of Mathematics at Mzuzu University and he saw this position of Professor of Mathematics as an extension of his missionary work to promote an awareness of the Spiritual in all that exists.

About the Book

Reading these tales from Northern Malawi comes quite close to watching their original performance. Thanks to Banda’s innovative presentation using performance directions, the reader practically sees and hears old Nyaviyuyi as she, through word, voice tone, gesture and facial expression, mocks nosy wives, celebrates the devotion of friendship and parental love, condemns theft, gives injustice its just deserts, throws the spotlight on duplicity and betrayal, thwarts the greed of the powerful and castigates disobedience.

The Author

Tito Banda was born and brought up in Tihauke Village, Mzimba District. He received his secondary education at Mzimba and Nkhata-Bay Secondary Schools and his college education at Messiah College and Temple University in the USA and finally at Chancellor College, University of Malawi. Until the time of his death in 2014, he was a lecturer in literature and creative writing in the then Department of Languages and Literature in the Faculty of Education at Mzuzu University. Expression and Literature: The Tumbuka Ideophone
The study of the Tumbuka language has been neglected for some time. This book by William Mvalo, at that time manager of the Mzuzu University Trust Fund, offers a comprehensive study of one aspect: The ideophone.

Polygamy in Northern Malawi
The early missionaries brought Christianity from the monogamous West to the polygamous societies of Africa. Were the missionaries right in demanding that converts dismiss all but one wife? Was this the demand of the Christian faith or of Western civilization? And were the converts right to dismiss their wives though they had married them according to the laws of the land? And who asked the children if they wanted their mothers to be dismissed and may or may not be married to another man?
This book is the first Mzuni book based on a PhD from Mzuzu University – more will follow.
